Directions: There are 4 passages in this part. Each passage is followed by some questions or unfinished statements. For each of them there are four choices marked A) B) C) and D). You should decide on the best choice and mark the corresponding letter on the Answer sheet with a single line through the center. Passage One Questions 11 to 15 are based on the following passage.
Petroleum products, such as gasoline, kerosene, home beatingoil, residual fuel oil, and lubricating oils, come from one source-crude oil found below the earth's surface , as 25,000 feet into the earth's interior . Sometimes crude oil is secured by drilling a hole through the earth , but more dry holes are drilled than those producing oil.[co.s] Pressure at the source or pumping forces crude oil to the surface . Crude oil wells flow at varying rates , from ten to thousands of barrels per hour. Petroleum products are always measured in 42 gallon barrels . Petroleum products vary greatly in physical appearance : thin, thick, transparent or opaque, but regardless, their chemical composition is made up of only two elements : carbon and hydrogen, which form compounds called hydrocarbons. Other chemical elements found in union with the hydrocarbons are few and are classified as impurities. Trace elements are also found , but these are of such minute quantities that they are disregarded . The combination of carbon and hydrogen forms many thousands of compounds which are possible because of the various positions and joinings of these two atoms in the hydrocarbon molecule . The various petroleum products are refined from the crude oil by heating and condensing the vapors. These products are the so-called light oils, such as gasoline, kerosene, and distillate oil. The residue remaining after the light oils are distilled is known as heavy or residual fuel oil and is used mostly for burning under boilers . Additional complicated refining processes rearrange the chemical structure of the hydrocarbons to produce other products, some of which are used to upgrade and increase the octane rating of various types of gasoline.
11. Which of the following is NOT true? A) Crude oil is found below land and water . B) Crude oil is always found a few hundred feet below the surface . C) Pumping and pressure force crude oil to the surface . D) A variety of petroleum products is obtained from crude oil .
12. Many thousands of hydrocarbon compounds are possible because_____. A) the petroleum products vary greatly in physical appearance . B) complicated refining processes rearrange the chemical structure. C) the two atoms in the molecule assume many positions D) the pressure needed to force it to the surface causes molecular transformation.
13. Which of the following is true? A) The various petroleum products are produced by filtration . B) Heating and condensation produce the various products. C) Chemical separation is used to produce the various products . D) Mechanical means such as the centrifuge(离心机) are used to produce the various products .
14. How is crude oil brought to the surface? A) Expansion of the hydrocarbons. B) Pressure and pumping. C) Vacuum created in the drilling pipe. D) Expansion and contraction of the earth's surface.
15. Which of the following is NOT listed as a light oil? A) Distillate oil. B) Lubricating oil. C) Gasoline. D) Kerosine.
Passage Two Questions 16 to 20 are based on the following passage.
Television has transformed politics in the United States by changing the way in which information is disseminated (传播), by altering political campaigns , and by changing citizens' patterns of response to politics. By giving citizens independent access to the candidates, television diminished the role of political party in the selection of the major party candidates. By centering politics on the person of the candidate , television accelerated the citizen's focus on character rather than issues. Television has altered the forms of political communications as well . The messages on which most of us rely are briefer than they once were . There stump(树桩讲台)speech , a political speech given by traveling politicians and lasting 1.5 to 2 hours , which characterized nineteen-century political discourse , has given way to the 30-second advertisement and the 10 second "sound bite " in broadcast news . Increasing the audience for speeches is not that standing in front of the politician but rather the viewing who will hear and see a snippet(小部分)of the speech on the news. In these abbreviated forms , much of what constituted the traditional political discourse of earlier ages has been lost . In 15 or 30 second , a speaker cannot establish the historical context that shaped the issue in question , cannot detail the probable causes of the problem , and canno t assert but do not argue.[co.s] Because television is an intimate medium, speaking through it required a changed political style that was more conversational , personal and visual than that of the old-style stump speech . Reliance on television means that increasingly visual , informed citizenship requires a new set of skills . Recognizing the power of television's pictures , politicians craft television, staged events, called pseudo-events, designed to attract media coverage. Much of the political activity we see on television news has been crafted by politicians, their speechwriters, and their public relations and advisers for televised consumption.[co.s] Sound bites in news and answers to questions in debates increasingly sound like advertisements.
16. What is the main point of the passage? A) Citizens in the United States are now more informed about political issues because of television coverage. B) Citizens in the United States prefer to see politicians on television instead of in person. C) Politics in the United States has become more controversial since the introduction of television. D) Politics in the United States has been significantly changed by television.
17. According to the passage, as compared with televised speeches, traditional political discourse was more successful at_____. A) allowing news coverage of political context B) placing political issues within a historical context C) making politics seen more intimate to citizens D) providing detailed information about a candidate's private behavior
18. The author states that "politicians assert but do not argue" (Line 4, Para. 3) in order to suggest that[sm] politicians______.[co.s] A) make claims without providing reasons for the claims B) take stronger position on issues than in the past C) enjoy explaining the issues to broadcasters D) dislike having to explain their own positions on issues to citizens
19. What idea does the author want to convey in paragraph 4? A) Politicians will need to learn to become more personal when meeting citizens. B) Politicians who are considered very attractive are favored by citizens over politicians who are less attractive. C) Citizens tend to favor a politician who analyzes the issue over one who does not. D) Citizens will need to learn how to evaluate visual political images in order to become better informed.
20. According to paragraph 5, staged political events are created so that politicians can _____. A) create more time to discuss political issues B) obtain more television coverage for themselves C) spend more time talking to citizens in person D) engage in debates with their opponents
